Known to the Modoc Indians as "the smiles of God," our area is one of the state's best-kept secrets. Although Hudson Bay Company fur trappers explored here as early as the 1820s, the area wasn't really noticed until 1849.

That was when the gold rush forged the Lassen and Noble Emigrant Trails through the region. But it was not until 1854 that anyone truly settled here, when Isaac N. Roop established a trading post in Honey Lake Valley.

Two years later, a gold rush a few miles to the south caused this to become the area's first permanent settlement, which would eventually be called Susanville.

As the gold rush died, settlers stayed put, spreading out over the region. This expansion provided the impetus for the town of Bieber to be founded. The arrival of the railroad in 1880 solidified Bieber's spot in the community.
